Dhumra Tussar Tissue Saree

Dhūmra the Sanskrit word for the colour of smoke is exactly what this saree looks like when the light hits it. A warm, shifting bronze-grey that is neither brown nor silver but something in between, something that changes with every movement, every hour of the day.
 
The fabric is tussar tissue the most characterful of all silk grounds. Tussar is not polished or obedient. It has a natural texture, a slight crinkle, a warmth that comes from the wild silk cocoons it is made from. The tissue weave adds a layer of iridescence on top so the surface catches light the way still water does, unpredictably, beautifully.
 
Across the pallu and drape, large florals have been painted by hand roses and leaves in blush, terracotta, and sage green. This is not a print. A painter sat with this fabric and put these flowers on it with a brush. You can see the confidence in every stroke. The blooms are impressionistic, slightly loose, the colours bleeding softly at the edges the way flowers do after rain. No two Dhūmra sarees will be identical. That is not a flaw. That is the entire point.
 
A silver diamond lace border runs the full length and hem — delicate, glittering, exactly enough. It frames the painting without competing with it. The way a good frame knows its job.
