Nishantika — Pure Muslin Jamdani Saree with Woven Bird Motifs

There is a moment between night and morning that Sanskrit poets named with unusual precision — nishanta, "the end of night," when darkness still clings to the sky's edge even as the first gold of dawn begins to spread along the horizon. Nishantika — she who carries that threshold — is a fitting name for a saree that moves from deep purple twilight into a border of pure, gathering gold.

Woven in rich purple pure muslin, the fabric carries the light, breathable quality muslin has been prized for across centuries — soft against the skin, airy in its fall, cool enough for long hours of wear. Across the body, small silver-white buti motifs scatter like the last visible stars before sunrise, quiet and evenly placed.

Where the body meets the border and pallu, the saree shifts entirely — deep purple giving way to a warm, weathered gold jamdani jaal, where flamingos, sparrows, and small birds in coral, yellow, and rose are woven directly into the fabric during the loom process, perched among branching vines rendered in delicate navy thread. The gold ground carries a soft, cloud-like shading, as though the marshland scene were caught in the changing light of early morning.

This is a saree for the woman who holds two moods at once — the quiet purple stillness of night, and the awakening gold of a new day, worn together in a single length of silk.

Pair with antique gold, oxidised silver, or coral jewellery. A contrasting blouse in gold, coral, or deep purple will let the jamdani border take centre stage.

Care Instructions

Muslin jamdani is a fine, breathable weave — light in the hand, but the supplementary-weft jaal work needs gentle handling to stay crisp.

Dry Clean Only — do not machine or hand wash
Iron on low heat, always on the reverse side, avoiding direct heat on the jamdani motif work
Store folded in muslin or cotton cloth, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the depth of the purple and the warmth of the gold
Refold periodically along different lines to prevent permanent creasing of the sheer fabric
Handle with care to avoid snagging — muslin is lightweight and can catch on jewellery or rough surfaces
Avoid direct contact with perfume or deodorant — spray well before draping
Blouse piece: Dry wash only
