Neelanjali — the grace of blue — takes its name from the shifting depths of peacock-teal silk, a colour that seems to hold two shades at once: emerald where the light falls soft, and sapphire where it deepens into shadow. This saree carries that same dual charm, its body alive with a gentle iridescence, framed by a regal violet border and a radiant antique gold pallu.
Woven in pure handloom silk, the body flows in a rich teal-blue duotone — the kind of shimmering colour-play that only handloom silk can achieve, shifting between peacock green and deep blue as it catches the light. Scattered across the surface are fine gold zari buttis, small and evenly placed, giving the fabric a quiet, constant sparkle without ever overwhelming its colour.
The border unfolds in a deep violet, adorned with bold gold-zari coin medallions, each one enclosing a finely woven peacock in traditional Paithani style — a nod to the weave's centuries-old motif language. Along the pallu, the saree blooms into its namesake Kalanjali design: pairs of regal peacocks facing each other in indigo and sky-blue, wings lifted, flanking a central kalash of blossoming flowers in red and green, with smaller birds perched below near the vase — a classic Paithani rendering of abundance and grace. A narrow guard border of green foliate motifs and red diamonds runs alongside, edged in fine gold-and-pink pinstripes and finished with a warm golden tasselled trim.
This is a saree for the woman drawn to depth over drama — one whose richness reveals itself slowly, the way silk catches light.
Pair with oxidised silver or antique gold jewellery, and jhumkas with a touch of blue or pink stonework, for a festive look. A contrasting blouse in maroon, purple, or gold will let the Kalanjali pallu take centre stage.
