Rajnigandha — Katan Rangkat Banarasi Saree
There is a flower that blooms only after dusk, its white petals catching whatever light remains and holding it through the night — the rajnigandha, tuberose, named literally "fragrant one of the night." In Banarasi weaving, a similar alchemy happens in rangkat — where two different coloured yarns are twisted together in warp and weft, so the fabric itself seems to hold two colours at once, shifting like petals catching light from different angles.
This saree is woven in Semi Katan Rangkat Silk, a technique reserved for the finest Banarasi looms — where magenta and deep purple threads are interlaced so closely that the fabric shimmers between the two, deepening to plum in shadow and lifting to violet-magenta wherever light falls across its folds. Katan silk itself, tightly twisted and plain-woven, gives the saree its crisp structure and lustrous fall — the essential foundation every true Banarasi rests upon.
Across the body, a dense trellis of ogee (kairi) medallions unfolds entirely in silver zari, each lattice cell holding a small floral bloom at its centre — a pattern of quiet, geometric repetition that catches the eye without ever feeling busy. The border and pallu rise into fuller ornamentation, a wide silver zari floral vine framing the rangkat body on both edges, building the saree from restrained lattice to opulent frame.
This is a saree for the woman who understands that the richest colours are rarely single ones — the kind of depth that reveals itself only in movement, the way rajnigandha releases its fragrance only once evening falls.
Pair with antique gold, kundan, or polki jewellery. A multicoloured or contrasting embellished blouse — as styled here — lets the rangkat shimmer take centre stage.
